Welcome to the Pivot With Passion podcast. Hi, I'm
Penny Casselman. I believe everyone is deserving of a
phenomenal life regardless of where you came from.
Life.
Life is what you make of it and when you learn to pivot with passion,
your world explodes with opportunities. Go
grab your favorite beverage and let's shake things up as we
explore how to pivot with passion.
Hello Director.
Yes, you. You are the director of your life.
Welcome. If you are new here,
a big round of applause to you
for showing up for yourself, for taking a listen and
jumping right in to being the best
version of you. I trust that you
had an amazingly
spooktacular Halloween. I
know I had an amazing time dressing up.
I went as Wednesday Addams because
I like dark themes for Halloween and
I adore that show on Netflix.
We are going to continue this
reflection on the holidays. What
I have always found is when Halloween
comes, everything is is a race to
the end of the year. I know looking at Halloween decorations
in stores as I was out shopping, they already had
Christmas items queued up and it got me
thinking. That is a lot like life.
What we go through once the holidays start.
It is a onslaught of commitments
and activities and for me
this year those holidays are going to look
completely different since not only
has my relationship changed
where I live, how I am showing up
for myself every day during this
holiday season. And I have to be honest, there is
some sadness for me because things
are going to look much differently for
me this year.
However, there is also a high
level of excitement heading into this holiday season.
This new season is going to give me the chance
to create new customs, new
rituals, new habits that meet me where I
am now in my life. I had to
embrace that. Life's transitions don't
mean that I've lost something.
It shows me that I am constantly being invited
to evolve with the situation that's right
in front of me.
I get very nostalgic during the holiday.
Season and recall times in my youth
about the rituals my family had about holding
candles, about singing in the choir,
all the Things that at the time made me feel
happy and excited and at ease
and loved. Yet a lot of those things
don't happen for me anymore. Some by choice,
some through circumstance. And I have to
remind myself that how it used to be
doesn't mean that is the best vision
for right now. I still have some of the same
decorations for all of the holidays that are coming up. I
still crave some of the same food and
slightly follow the same schedule when it comes to fitting in
time to see friends and family. Yet
sometimes those things don't spark
the same level of joy for me that they did
when I was first developing.
Those habits and rituals. And if I
think about the types of people that you'll encounter this holiday
season, I can boil it down to two different versions of
one, those who have lives that have recently
changed and are learning to reimagine
what celebration looks like. Hand raised over
here for me on that one. And two, there are
those whose lives look exactly the
same, yet that sameness
might now feel stagnant. How often
do we find ourselves sometimes going through the motions
without thinking really how they make us feel? What
kind of energy do they generate? What kind of excitement? What
kind of growth? And simply going through the motions
can actually be just fine. Now both
experiences are valid, whether you've
recently experienced change and are learning to reimagine, or
you habitually do the exact same thing. But perhaps
that's feeling stagnant.
Yet both of those scenarios are
simply invitations to evolve.
And I love that phrase more than anything.
Too often I hear the word change.
And I push back on that phrase all the
time because we as humans don't quit.
Quote change.
I believe we fully evolve
because we carry with us all of those experiences,
all of those circumstances that we've encountered, and
we get to use them as fuel for our evolution.
A metaphor I can share is think.
Of it like opening your holiday box.
That you've had in storage for the last I don't know, depends on where you
put them away.
But 10 months? You know that some items
inside that.
Box still bring a smile to your face. But
there are others, when you unwrap or pull them out,
simply don't spark the same level of
joy and excitement. They just don't
fit where you are in life. You don't discard
the meaning behind the items that don't fit. You simply choose
what still reflects who you are today.
And that's what evolution looks like, honoring the past
while allowing space for what feels
aligned right now.
It's time for a clarity cocktail.
Today's clarity cocktail was beautifully delivered by
Maya Angelou and she writes, we delight in
the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit
the changes it has gone through to achieve
that beauty. Now, I'm not going to call out Maya Angelou for using
change instead of evolve. However, the sentiment is
still there because she simply
points out that change often only looks
beautiful in hindsight. But really,
transformation happens while the butterfly
is first in its chrysalis, in the
quiet, in the discomfort, in the moments.
When it's redefining how it will evolve.
And it fully express its joy and beauty. And
that can be the same for us when
things are quiet, when things aren't feeling quite like
they fit or they're not resonating with us like they used to
in the past, in those moments of quiet reflection
and in the.
Discomfort we might feel when things around.
Us don't look the same as they did before. Those
are moments when you get to
redefine what joy and belonging
look like for you. And this is the beauty and the.
Importance of what she shares is you get
to create the beauty through
change, evolution, not in
spite of it.
I will read Maya Angelou's quote one more
time.
We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely
admit the changes it has gone through to achieve
that beauty. Director Take that to heart
and know that evolution and change during
this holiday season can be embraced and
deliver a new level of joy and excitement in
your life.
And now back to the episode. Cheers.
Circling back to this idea that we are in a season
of evolution where, yes, we get to reinvent
traditions, we get to reclaim excitement
for the holidays ahead, and we get to stay
present with where we are through that
evolution of ideas and habits and thoughts.
I know for years I was going through the holidays on
autopilot, and I can only imagine that I am not
the only person that charges through the last
part of the year doing the same thing over
and over again that we did years previous. I would
argue that it has felt chaotic at times and that
was a coping mechanism for me to get through, do the same
thing I did before because clearly at the time
it was fine and it worked. It got me through
the challenging season, even if it wasn't
exactly what I had envisioned. And going through
the holidays on autopilot.
Those rituals that we used to enjoy.
Maybe, yeah, for me they had become.
Habits instead of really heartfelt
experiences. That spark of excitement
simply fades because we forget. I
forgot that I am the director of my life and
I can redesign what joy
looks like during the holidays I want to share with you three
high performance ways to create
new rituals that reflect who you are
now. So the first way is to get some
clarity. Really pause and ask yourself, what
kind of energy do I want this season to have?
Do you want to be peaceful, playful, rejuvenating,
calm? At ease? And when you
select a word that embodies how you want to feel,
use that word to guide every
choice that you make this holiday season.
The second High Performance way is to have courage.
Give yourself permission to do things differently.
Heck, start a new tradition, even if others
don't understand them. I know for me, I've been
thinking about new things I want to do this year.
New activities, new ways of connecting
with others, and the courage for me to do that
generates some excitement for what's to come. And the third high
Performance way is to find connection. Find
meaning in shared experiences. Not
repetition. Reach out, reconnect, or simply
create a moment that matters.
As I've continued to get older and be a little bit
more reflective, connection means so much more
to me now than it did in the past. I talked earlier about
finding that box of decorations or
things that remind you of the season you're in, and
truthfully, I have let go of
so many of those physical things because
what's most important to me now is are the connections
and the time and the experience that I
have with others. Yes, it's nice to have little
mementos or things to place around the house to remind you
of a certain encounter or a certain activity,
but I don't rely on those things to support my need
for connection. As a High Performance coach, I
do go through all of these three same
high performance coach concepts with my one.
On one clients because they serve you.
All through life, not simply at the holidays
and when you can learn to.
Embrace clarity, courage and connection
on an ongoing basis. Talk about
excitement and joy and lightness.
Those three things make putting one foot in front of the
other one on.
Any given day, in any given season.
In any given environment, one degree
easier. When you are faced with moments of
evolution, when you are aligned with your
values, not just your habits,
excitement will return into your life.
Director Sharing this message with you today

my new holiday season. So thank you for

that as I deliver my podcast each week,
